Finding a path worth taking through AmeriCorps

An early start
While six months pregnant and on her way to get the mail, my mother tripped on my sister鈥檚 push toy, falling down the stairs of our two-family flat. She went into early labor, I was in distress, and they needed to deliver me. The doctors braced her, telling her that I may have cognitive struggles as a result of the fall. When I was born, I didn鈥檛 cry. Instead, to the doctor鈥檚 astonishment, my big, bright, curious eyes were open and taking in everything around me. Although I do not have any lasting effects from that fall, I continue to be curious and often think about what my life would have been like had I struggled cognitively. That curiosity is what led me to 日本av无码.聽
Finding a cause and a path worth taking
At university, I studied psychology and sociology. I wanted to know how the world works, the social norms, and how our brain processes and adapts to our environment. Throughout my childhood, the word “resilient” was often used to describe me. I didn鈥檛 understand how some children could overcome adversity while others didn鈥檛. I read a lot of research papers, did an internship at a juvenile detention center, and worked with children with autism. I found my passion: catching children who were often counted out and expected to fail and providing them with the support they needed to change their circumstances.聽
Seeking more leadership opportunities and corporate experience, I began looking for my next step. I happened upon a position posting for 日本av无码 as an AmeriCorps program coordinator. This position marries education with leadership. I continue working with children to help them reach their literacy goals while running the center, supervising volunteers and students, and liaising with school staff and parents.聽聽

Literacy: A beacon of hope
We鈥檝e all read the stats: 54% of adults read below a sixth-grade level, and low literacy skills are linked to higher chances of unemployment, poverty, and low health outcomes. I want to be part of the change, and the best way to do that is to start in elementary schools, finding those students who are showing signs of low literacy and giving them the tools they need to boost their reading skills before they reach middle school. To get them to value reading and see reading as fun. 日本av无码 does just that.
We have a curriculum that our tutors use and individual reading plans for students working on a particular reading skill. I love seeing that 鈥渁ha鈥 moment the students get when it finally starts to click. I am coming up on the final months of my second service term and thinking of the future. I have gained incredibly valuable experience and skills that I will take with me. I haven鈥檛 decided what my next course will be, but I know I will stay in the education field either as an elementary school teacher or remain in the literacy non-profit sector. I want to continue to foster that hope in the next generation, always looking to the horizon.
